Recognize The Warning Signs

There are many indications that a resident is not receiving adequate care, and may be a victim of abuse or neglect Take a minute to look for these warning signs.

1. Open wounds, bedsores, burns, cuts, bruises, welts, and/or skin discoloration or deterioration
2. Dehydration (dry, parched lips, thirst, delerium)
3. Malnutrition or unexplained weight loss
4. Evidence of increased fearfulness and anxiety, especially around staff members
5. Sudden change in behavior or mental status
6. Signs of depression like emotional upset or agitation
7. Extremely withdrawn or uncommunicative
8. Unusual behavior like sucking, biting, or rocking
9. Increased confusion within a short period of time
10. Poor personal hygiene
11. Medication errors
12. Frequent falls
13. Lack of assistance with eating and drinking
14. Unsanitary and unclean conditions
15. Dirt, soiled bed, foul odors
16. Unexplained injuries.

Don't ignore your suspicion.

Even the smallest change may indicate a much more serious problem.

Ask questions.

How often was the patient exercised? How much did he eat? How much did she drink? Why does he look so sick today? Make sure your loved ones are receiving the care they deserve.
